Man sets fire to home after Thanksgiving argument, police say

A man allegedly set his home on fire after an argument with family on Thanksgiving Day in north suburban Beach Park.

Lake County sheriff’s deputies were called to the home about an hour before the alleged arson and were told Erik J. Crump, 21, “was antagonizing and arguing with others in the home,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

After the argument, family told Crump he was going to be kicked out of the home, the sheriff’s office said. Crump left the home and returned to his bedroom a short time later, where he allegedly used an accelerant to set his room on fire before fleeing again, officials said. The family saw smoke and safely evacuated.

Crump was allegedly seen fleeing on foot from the home in the 40100 block of North Lone Oak Road. A sheriff’s canine team tracked Crump to a storage facility in the 39400 block of North Lewis Avenue, where he was arrested without incident, authorities said.

Crump was charged with aggravated and residential arson and is scheduled to appear in court Friday morning, authorities said.
