Chicago police shot a man in the Roseland neighborhood on Chicago’s Far South Side Thursday afternoon, according to the Civilian Office of Police Accountability.
The shooting happened at 111th and State streets, according to the Civilian Office of Police Accountability.
The wounded man was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition. Two Chicago police officers, who were not injured, were taken to Little Company of Mary Medical Center in Evergreen Park, according to the Chicago Fire Department.
Red and yellow crime scene tape blocked off the street where the shooting happened, and at least 10 Chicago police cruisers were parked nearby, some with blue lights flashing. A Super Save gas station was inside the police perimeter and closed as of 4 p.m.
Brandon Haskins, who lives in the neighborhood, was delivering materials for his logistics company when he heard the gun shots. He panicked, not knowing where they were coming from, then relaxed a bit when he realized they were a few blocks away.
“It appeared to be a volley of shots, as if two people were shooting back and forth at each other,” said Haskins, 38, who has lived in the neighborhood since he was a kid. “I heard the shots so I froze, then when I determined that the shots weren’t close enough to be aimed at me, I went and got up out of there and got to safety.”
Haskins said he didn’t see anyone involved in the shooting.
“Unfortunately it happens all too often,” he said. “It’s sad to say, I don’t want to say it’s the norm, but it happens so often you kind of become numb to it. Growing up on the south side of Chicago automatically comes with PTSD.”
Anyone with information related to this incident is urged to call COPA at 312-746-3609.
