A French billionaire responded to a keyboard warrior’s challenge to meet him outside Lidl for a punch-up by posting a video of himself at the supermarket saying: ‘I’m waiting’.

Xavier Niel, owner of the Free telecoms group, had been goaded by a disgruntled customer who claimed slow internet speed had ruined his game of Call of Duty.

Posting in May, X user Fuego 7 wrote: ‘Xavier Niel I hate you. I propose a one-v-one in front of the Lidl on Rue Sainte in Marseille.’

Mr Niel shared his video to social media on Friday, shouting: ‘I’m here! I’m waiting for you! Where are you, come on! Do you want to meet in the car park?’

The 57-year-old, who is one of France’s richest men, was in Marseille for an AI conference when he posted the clip.

Fuego 7 replied to the X post, declining the invitation.

He joked: ‘I would have liked to but 34.2 temperature plus stomach ache plus headache sorry I give up.’

Lidl’s social media team also got in on the gag.

The supermarket posted: ‘Please come and get the gentleman who has been tweeting since this morning in front of the store on Rue Sainte in Marseille.’

Mr Niel has telecoms investments in nine countries in Europe with nearly 50 million active subscribers combined and more than 10 billion euros in revenue.

He is married to Delphine Arnault, chief executive of Dior and executive vice president at Louis Vuitton.

Her father is multi-billionaire Bernard Arnault, one of the world’s richest men.
