Man wounded in shooting outside Wrigley Field

A man was shot and wounded Thursday evening near Murphy’s Bleachers outside Wrigley Field.

The 26-year-old was on a sidewalk just before 7 p.m. in the 900 block of West Waveland Avenue when gunfire erupted, striking him in the left arm, Chicago police said. He was taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center in good condition.

A person of interest was taken into custody, and a firearm was recovered, police said.

Tom Morahan was on his way to a porta-potty in the area when he noticed a group of around 15 people arguing with about five other people.

“It seemed like the bigger group was walking away, going east, and then I went into the bathroom and like 15-20 seconds later, I just heard a bunch of gunshots. It was crazy,” he said, also noting that he heard around “10 pops, maybe more.”

Morahan said he ducked while in the bathroom, then waited a minute to walk out.

He walked into Murphy’s Bleachers, where bar stools were strewn on the floor and people were hiding behind the bar, he said.

He said the victim didn’t appear to be involved with the large group that was fighting.

“It was pretty wild,” said Morahan, who lives in the neighborhood. “North Side of Chicago, you don’t see this too much, especially [near] Wrigley, Murphy’s.”

Area 3 detectives are investigating.
