OAKLAND — A man has been jailed for allegedly firing a gun during a shootout that turned fatal at his 27th birthday party, court records show.
Quazauy Waugh, 27, was charged with violating probation in a prior gun case, after police identified him as a suspected shooter in the March 4 gunfire exchange that left 29-year-old William Robinson dead. Waugh remains at Santa Rita Jail in Dublin, and is next due in court in three weeks, records show.
Waugh was celebrating his birthday on 61st Avenue in Oakland on the night of March 4, when a group approached from another street and began firing at the residence, police said. During the subsequent exchange of gunfire, Robinson was shot and killed.
Police say Robinson had been seen at a Berkeley High basketball game earlier in the evening before heading to 61st Avenue where the party was taking place. No one has been charged with murder in his death, which remains under investigation.
But authorities moved to violate Waugh’s probation after reviewing surveillance footage from a nearby parked Tesla, according to court records. Police say Waugh matched the description of one shooter, and that when they interviewed Waugh he said he heard gunshots that night, but claimed to have been too intoxicated at the time to have a clear memory of what happened, authorities said.
Waugh was charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm in February 2024, stemming from a “high risk” traffic stop in Fremont, police said in court records. He later pleaded no contest to a gun charge for a two-year probation term.
