Monday’s lightning storms ignited fires across California’s Central Valley, some of which quickly grew past 500 acres.
Eastern Fresno County alone recorded more than 1,000 lightning strikes in three hours, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said.
The map above shows the location of the largest fires that started Monday. Three much larger fires from last week — Sites, Post and Aero — are approaching full containment, CalFire said.
1/ Apache, 673 acres, 15% containment at 6:15 a.m. Tuesday. Evacuations were ordered south of Oroville for a fire that started around 7:30 p.m. Two structures were reported destroyed. See Butte County’s evacuation map for the area of the order.
2/ Amoruso, 502 acres, 80% containment at 9:11 p.m. Monday. The fire northwest of Rocklin started around 5 p.m. and exploded to 350 acres in its first half-hour but then was quickly controlled, and there was no further spread after 6 p.m.
3/ 1-2, 215 acres, 0% containment at 6:45 a.m. Tuesday. It started around 5:30 p.m. in San Joaquin County.
4/ Bolt, 857 acres, 0% containment at 1:30 a.m. Tuesday. It started around 5:20 p.m., and Fresno County issued evacuation warnings around 7 p.m.
5/ Flash, 744 acres, 0% containment at 1:15 a.m. Tuesday. It started around 3 p.m. Evacuation warnings but no orders.
