Among the teams hoping to be part of this select company are Prince and Furman, who caused a stir in the first round against Arizona and Virginia respectively. At the other end of the spectrum are blue bloods like Duke, Kansas and UCLA who hope to keep running the business.

Furman Paladins ML via San Diego State Aztecs (+200)
Furman is no joke. The Paladins were a trendy pick to upset Virginia in the opening round, and they did just that on Thursday. Now they face an opponent who is also from a small conference (The Mountain West) and hasn’t been with the Sweet 16 since 2014. The Aztecs are a defensively-minded team (just like Virginia!), which of course makes for relatively close, low-scoring games. Paladins should be able to stay with us from start to finish, and we just saw how well they handle late-game pressure. Sound the angry alarm…again!
Duke Blue Devils -3.5 over Tennessee Volunteers (-110)
Duke is one of the hottest teams in the nation after winning the ACC tournament and then easily eliminating a legitimate Oral Roberts team in Round 1. Oral Roberts proved a threat in March but that game was a blowout from the start. With the Blue Devils rolling, Tennessee struggled the regular-season stretch after losing point guard Zakai Zeigler to a knee injury. Zeigler won’t be coming back, which means the volunteers are in for an uphill battle. Tennessee’s defense-based play can protect everyone in the country, but it’s hard to see how offense will put a lot of points on Duke. Look for the Blue Devils to knock down the brackets with a great defense of their own and not only advance but also cover the spread.

UCLA Bruins -7.5 over Northwestern Wildcats (-110)
I have UCLA winning everything as stated in our March Madness Futures Roundtable. This is an experienced group assembled for March, led by Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Tyger Campbell while being coached by Mick Cronin. I have no reason to believe the Bruins will bounce off Northwestern in Round 2. The Wildcats took care of Boise State Thursday, but it’s hard to overlook the fact that they lost 4 of their last 5 games before the NCAA tournament. Before defeating Boise State, Northwestern had gone through 5 straight contests without scoring more than 65 points. I don’t think the Cats can compete with UCLA.
