The blaze broke out on a block of flats
A large fire has broken out on the roof of a building in Staines town centre.
Surrey Fire and Rescue said eight fire engines are on the scene to battle the flames, having arrived around 12.35pm.
The building was previously a multi storey car park, but is now being redeveloped into flats.
The fire service said: ‘Crews remain at the scene tackling the fire.
‘Please can you avoid the area if possible and we ask residents to keep their windows shut.’
One woman posted video from the scene on X, saying she was told the gas tanks on the roof exploded.
Footage showed black smoke billowing from the top of the building as flames shot up into the sky.
