President Trump’s Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced Friday that the American government is going to contribute $1.7 billion in foreign aid (over five years) directly to the government of Kenya to spend on healthcare rather than through non-governmental organizations (NGOs), replacing former U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) foreign aid models.
Note: Earlier this year the Trump administration dismantled USAID, which from 2020–2025, contributed approximately $2.5 billion in foreign assistance to Kenya (approximately $470 million per year) with 80 percent allocated for health-related programs.
Former MAGA Congressman Matt Gaetz, star of OAN’s The Matt Gaetz Show who recently gained media access to the Pentagon, replied to Rubio’s new deal: “How about just no foreign aid while we are $37 trillion in debt?”
[Note: The prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis — the main health goals of the aid deal — is seen by some ‘America First’ advocates as pragmatic, even as others like Gaetz portray it as spendthrift humanitarianism.]
According to two State Department officials involved in the negotiations with Kenya, who spoke with the Associated Press, the new healthcare agreement with the African nation has “an emphasis on faith-based medical providers,” and “family planning programs that comply with U.S. restrictions on the provision of abortion services will also be eligible.”
One of the objectives of Project 2025, the Heritage foundation blueprint for a second Trump term, is to prevent U.S. aid from going to foreign NGOS that “provide abortion services, information, counselling, referrals or advocacy.”
