Memorial service honors Steve McMichael three weeks after death

Former Bears defensive lineman Steve McMichael’s private memorial service was held Thursday afternoon in Oakbrook Terrace, 22 days after he died from complications of ALS at age 67.

McMichael was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in August, the result of a campaign that began when he was diagnosed with 36-month onset ALS in January 2021. By the time he was voted in by the veterans committee, McMichael could no longer stand, eat or talk.

He received the gold jacket at his home in Homer Glen on Aug. 3 surrounded by fellow Hall of Famers and Super Bowl XX winners Richard Dent, Mike Singletary, and Dan Hampton. Former teammates were in attendance Thursday; Hampton eulogized him.

From 1981-93, McMichael was a dominant force on a franchise known for its defense. He still ranks second in franchise history in sacks. He was just as dynamic off the field, performing as a pro wrestler, running for mayor of Romeoville and hosting radio shows.

He is survived by wife Misty and daughter Macy.
