A Metra train derailment near Union Station disrupted three lines during the Wednesday evening rush hour, officials said.
A Milwaukee District West passenger train’s front wheels fell off the tracks around 5:50 p.m. just as it exited Union Station and approached Canal Street, Metra spokesman Michael Gilles said.
The train remained upright and none of the roughly 400 passengers was injured, he said. Passengers were transferred to other trains.
The derailment blocked one of three rails in that area, causing up to two hour delays for the Milwaukee District West, Milwaukee District North and the North Central Service lines, Gilles said. The last of those lines resumed around 7:45 p.m.
Crews were expected to rerail the locomotive by Thursday morning, with no further delays anticipated, Gilles said.
The cause of the derailment was under investigation.
