One of the major under radar wins this season came back in Week 4 when Kankakee beat Normal 28-17 on the road.
The Ironmen are a consistent Class 7A powerhouse. Last season, they tested Mount Carmel in the playoffs, and no team in Central Illinois has challenged them this year.
That win made the Kays 2-2. Lincoln-Way East smoked them in Week 2, and they lost 33-12 against Nazareth in the season opener.
Kankankee debuts in the Super 25 this week. Edward Hazelett, the new coach, guided the Kays to four consecutive wins, and they will be favored in their final three regular season games.
Yorkville also joins. The Foxes are unbeaten and have quality wins against Oswego, Minooka and St. Patrick. It’s been a solid turnaround season for Yorkville, which missed out on the playoffs at 4-5 last season.
Sandburg drops out after losing to Naperville North. St. Francis was upset by IC Catholic and is gone for now.
The Sandburg-Naperville North game brought to mind how bad the DuPage Valley/Southwest Suburban conference merger has been. These games don’t make sense or have any history behind them. It feels like the schedule the districts proposal would have delivered.
Hopefully that experiment ends soon. It would be great to see the DuPage Valley return. No one needs a conference that has Bradley-Bourbonnais and DeKalb in the same division.
