Michael Soroka exits Cubs debut vs. Reds with right shoulder discomfort

Right-hander Michael Soroka’s Cubs debut Monday lasted just two innings. He exited the game against the Reds with what the team later called right shoulder discomfort.

Soroka struck out three of the four batters he faced in the first inning, walking Matt McLain. In the second, he surrendered a solo home run to Tyler Stephenson, the only hit Soroka allowed.

Going into the top of the third inning, the Marquee Sports Network broadcast showed Soroka talking with head trainer Nick Frangella and pitching coach Tommy Hottovy.

The Cubs acquired Soroka from the Nationals on Wednesday for their No. 13 and 14 prospects, Arizona Complex League infielder Ronny Cruz, 18, and Triple-A outfielder Christian Franklin. Soroka was their first acquisition of the 2025 trade deadline.

In the bottom of the second inning Monday, two pitching changes were in the works simultaneously.

For the Cubs, right-hander Ben Brown was warming up in the bullpen to replace Soroka the next inning.

At the same time, the Reds were checking on left-hander Nick Lodolo, who would then walk off the field due to a blister on his left index finger, with two outs and a 1-0 count on Justin Turner.
