MILLBRAE — A man was arrested Friday for allegedly threatening to attack a person at a church event, authorities said.
The 50-year-old resident of Belmont faces a charge of criminal threats for allegedly threatening violence against a specific person at a church mass scheduled for Sunday at Our Lady of Lebanon Church, according to a press release from the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office.
“Threats against anyone representing a place of worship is unacceptable and will not be tolerated in San Mateo County,” Sheriff Christina Corpus said in the press release. “I am thankful for the community member that alerted our office allowing us to quickly take the suspect into custody, keeping our community safe.”
A community member had reported a social media post made by the suspect that included specific threats toward a member of Our Lady of Lebanon Church. The same person told police that the suspect had a history of harassing a church organizer, which sparked “sustained fear and concern for attendee safety,” authorities said.
The church is located on the 600 block of El Camino Real in Millbrae, authorities added.
Deputies responded to reports of the threatening statements around 8:40 a.m. Friday and arrested the suspect at his residence, authorities said. He was also served with a Gun Violence Restraining Order, which prevents him from owning firearms.
The Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate the case, authorities said. The incident was also reported to the Northern California Regional Intelligence Center.
The suspect was booked into Maguire Correctional Facility.
Anyone with further information about this incident is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 650-363-4911.
