A portion of Milwaukee Avenue is closing Monday as a roughly six week improvement project gets underway, transportation officials announced.
Starting Monday, Milwaukee Avenue will be restricted to local traffic only between Chicago Avenue and Kinzie Street with one lane remaining open during non-working hours for drivers and bicyclists, the Chicago Department of Transportation said. Flaggers will direct local traffic through the closure.
The improvements, which are part of the city’s Complete Streets project, will resurface the closed portion of Milwaukee Avenue and includes the installation of new catch basins, bus boarding islands and adjacent bus pads and concrete protected bike lanes.
Periodic full closures will be required to complete certain work activities, and advance notice will be provided, the department said.
Northbound vehicles driving through the area will detour north on Des Plaines Street, west on Hubbard, northwest on Milwaukee, west on Grand Avenue, north on Ogden Avenue, back to northbound Milwaukee.
Vehicles going south will detour south on Ogden Avenue, east on Grand Avenue and south on Des Plaines Street.
A full list of detours, including detours for bicyclists, can be found on the City of Chicago’s official website.
