Missing foster dog rescued from Douglas County trench by South Metro firefighters
A foster dog who disappeared from his Parker home last weekend was rescued Monday afternoon from a trench in the Douglas County town.
Carl, a Neapolitan Mastiff, went missing from a home near South Parker Road and Stroh Road on Sunday, according to Big Dogs Huge Paws, a nonprofit dedicated to finding homes for giant dogs in need.
Then, just before 4 p.m. Monday, South Metro Fire Rescue and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office’s animal control unit responded to reports of a trapped dog just over a mile away from where Carl went missing, according to the fire agency.
Carl had fallen about 8 feet into a trench at South Parker Road and North Pinery Parkway, South Metro officials said.
The South Metro team worked with the Douglas County animal control unit and Fiore & Sons, a nearby construction crew, to rescue the dog, according to the fire agency.
One video posted by South Metro Fire Rescue shows construction equipment moving excess dirt away from the trench to clear the way for rescuers. Another shows the team hacking away at the trench by hand while others wait nearby with rescue equipment.
“Who’s a 10 out of 10 good boy?” one rescuer can be heard asking the dog as the South Metro team works to maneuver the dog out of the tight spot. “We’re learning together, handsome.”
Carl was safely rescued and spent the night at an emergency veterinary clinic to recover from mild dehydration, according to South Metro. He’s expected to make a full recovery.
