ST. LOUIS — The San Jose Earthquakes saw their unbeaten streak end at eight games after suffering a disheartening 2-1 loss to St. Louis City SC at Energizer Park on Saturday afternoon.
Eduard Löwen scored on a penalty kick in stoppage time to break a 1-1 tie as St. Louis City got its first win under interim head coach David Critchley. The win ended St. Louis City’s 11-game winless streak while also handing San Jose its first loss in more than a month.
Both of St. Louis’ goals came in stoppage time, including Joao Klauss’ goal in the waning moments of the first half that broke a scoreless tie. Klauss headed forward a lofted pass by Löwen and ran past the defense to slot it home under goalkeeper Earl Edwards Jr., who was late coming out of his area.
“We shouldn’t have lost this game today,” San Jose coach Bruce Arena said. “Those are plays that shouldn’t happen. We conceded two very poor goals.”
San Jose (6-7-4) entered unbeaten in six straight MLS games – and eight overall — dating to a 2-1 loss at Columbus on April 26.
San Jose’s goal Saturday came in the 83rd minutes when Beau Leroux sprayed the ball out to the left wing for Vítor Costa, whose cross for Josef Martínez was flicked in by the prolific forward for the 1-1 equalizer.
San Jose will take a two-week break before resuming the MLS season with a road game in Portland on Friday, June 13.
