An in-progress auto burglary was reported around 5:50 a.m. near Depot and Third streets, the Morgan Hill Police Department said in a news release. The victim confronted the suspects, who in turn brandished handguns and left the scene in two cars.

Minutes later, officers found the cars and tried to stop them. The drivers, however, sped away, according to police.

Officers gave chase and used a device similar to a spike strip to puncture the tires of the cars, but the drivers continued onto northbound Highway 101, police said. The morning commute was in full swing and officers opted to call off the pursuit out of concern for public safety.

One of the cars was quickly found unoccupied on Cochrane Road near Malaguerra Avenue. The other car was also found unoccupied in the Mission Ranch neighborhood.

Officers spent the next several hours scouring the area for the suspects. One was eventually found and taken into custody. Police said he had an unregistered gun on him.

The suspect was booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail in San Jose on felony charges including robbery, burglary and possession of a firearm, according to police.

Authorities are asking Mission Ranch and Coyote Estates residents to check their security cameras and provide any footage related to the case to Detective Cpl. Sean Farrell at sean.farrell@morganhill.ca.gov.
