MARTINEZ — A 19-year-old woman died Tuesday, and her 36-year-old mother was arrested on suspicion of her murder, police said.
Authorities identified the victim as Martinez resident Shaniyah Kazee. She died at John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek after being taken there by ambulance.
In a statement, police Capt. Ben Alldritt identified the suspect as Brittney Kazee and confirmed that she is Shaniyah Kazee’s mother.
Brittney Kazee remained in custody Wednesday at the Martinez Detention Facility in lieu of $1 million bail. Prosecutors are expected to review the case against her this week and decide whether to file charges.
Alldritt said officers responded about 1:40 p.m. to a reported fight at an apartment complex on Fig Tree Lane. Callers advised the officers that a person had been stabbed.
Shaniyah Kazee was down in the parking lot when officers arrived, Alldritt said. Contra Costa Fire Protection District personnel and police worked to save her at the scene, before the ambulance rushed her to John Muir Medical Center. Lab technicians from the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office processed the scene.
