Mum ‘threatened to kill’ ex’s new girlfriend in bitter campaign over child

A mum has been issued with a restraining order after she threatened to kill her ex-boyfriend’s new lover during a dispute over her daughter.

Megan Evanson, 26, threatened to ‘smash in’ the face of Abbie Jones after complaining about her being involved in picking up the four-year-old child from her home.

Evanson, from Crewe, Cheshire, initially messaged ex-partner Adam Garnett, who was Miss Jones, before repeating her death threats on Snapchat and Facebook.

Miss Jones, also of Crewe, only found out about the online threats from a friend. She has since installed security cameras at her property and refuses to get involved in future pick-ups.

At Warrington magistrates’ court, Evanson pleaded guilty to two charges of sending by public communication network an offensive, indecent, obscene or menacing message and was banned from contacting Miss Jones for two years.

She was also sentenced to a 12-month community order with a requirement that she attend 20 days of rehabilitation activity and was fined £80 with £199 in costs and a surcharge.

Neve Flynn, prosecuting, said: ‘Miss Jones is the new partner of Mr Garnett, and he received a message from the defendant on May 26 containing threats that she was going to kill Miss Jones.

‘A verbal argument ensued over the phone in relation to the child they share.

‘Miss Jones says in her statement that this conduct has affected her. She refuses to collect the child and refuses to go to the defendant’s property due to the threats.

‘She is scared for herself and her own children. She has sought to install cameras on her property for protection. Distress was caused to Miss Jones in particular.’

Evanson’s lawyer Melanie Camm said: ‘These threats were made following the complainant’s attending at her property and taking the child – it was Miss Evanson who contacted the police in relation to that, and it is then that she made threats posted online.

‘There is a lot of background in relation to her, and she is genuinely sorry for her actions. She was also pregnant at the time and going through a high-risk pregnancy with a lot of hospital appointments.’

‘It should be said that both complainants said that they did not think the threats would be carried out.’

District Judge Jack McGarva told Evanson: ‘I accept that there are two sides to every story, but that does not really excuse you sending threatening messages like this.

‘I won’t award compensation as that would inflame an already difficult situation.’
