New brushfire sparks in Douglas County

A new brush fire sparked Tuesday in Douglas County between Chatfield State Park and Daniels Park, according to South Metro Fire Rescue.

South Metro crews responded to the fire at 6005 Ron King Trail at 2:17 p.m. Tuesday, according to the agency.

Douglas County officials held a news conference on Ron King Trail Monday for a series of mostly contained weekend fires that sparked along the train tracks in that same area, running down Colorado 85 from Highlands Ranch Parkway to the town of Louviers.

The causes of both Tuesday’s fire and the weekend fires remain under investigation, but Douglas County Sheriff’s officials posted on X.com that lightning is believed to be the cause of Tuesday’s fire after people reported a lightning strike in the area.

South Metro officials said the fire is moving southwest at “a moderate rate” in heavy timber, brush and shrub oak.

Multiple fire engines were tackling the fire on the ground while helicopters made water drops, according to fire officials.

As of 3:10 p.m., the fire was holding at about 5 acres, South Metro officials said.

This is a developing story and may be updated.
