The mysterious case of a teen who died aboard a Carnival cruise ship was given a new twist by her stepmother’s court filing.
Anna Kepner, 18, a high school student from Titusville, Fla., was found dead Nov. 8 aboard the Carnival Horizon as it returned to Miami from a Caribbean itinerary. She had been traveling with her father, his wife and the stepmother’s two children.
The FBI had said it was investigating the death; it released no further details.
But in a petition filed Monday, Nov. 17, in Brevard County family court, the teen’s stepmother indicated investigators told her that a criminal case concerning the death “may be initiated” against one of her children.
The information, reported by TV station WFTV, was included in the stepmother’s emergency petition seeking rescheduling of a hearing concerning a custody matter with her ex-husband. Because of the possible criminal case, the filing argued, “any testimony the Respondent may give … could be prejudicial to her or her adolescent child in this pending criminal investigation.”
After the report of the court filing, ABC News said Wednesday that a source had confirmed that, among other possibilities, investigators were looking into whether Kepner’s stepbrother had an altercation with her aboard the ship. The ABC report said the young woman was found “dead under a bed, wrapped in a blanket and covered by life vests.”
The FBI has not commented on any of the recent reports.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.
