New law bans Illinois hotels from providing complimentary personal-care items

Hotels in Illinois will no longer be providing complimentary personal-care items for guests under a new law.

The Small Single-Use Plastic Bottle Act, signed by Gov. JB Pritzker last month, aims to reduce excess plastic use in hotels.

Hotels will no longer be able to provide small single-use plastic bottles containing personal care products to guests staying in a sleeping room or guests using the hotel’s public restrooms.

The law bans shampoo, hair conditioner or bath soap in plastic bottles or containers smaller than 6 ounces that are not intended for re-use.

The law will go into effect July 1, 2025, in hotels with 50 rooms or more and Jan. 1, 2026, in hotels with less than 50 rooms.

However, hotels may provide personal-care items at no cost if requested at a place other than guest rooms or public bathrooms.

Hotels that violate the law will be issued a written warning for the first violation and can be fined up to $500 for every violation thereafter.
