New space for LA Regional Food Bank, which has given out 2 billion pounds of food

The Los Angeles Regional Food Bank had much to celebrate on Tuesday, June 25. The nonprofit marked an impactful milestone—two billion pounds of food distributed—and held a ribbon cutting for its massive new distribution facility.

The food bank’s new 256,000-square-foot facility contains areas for produce, dairy and meat refrigeration, food storage and packaging. The facility is located in the City of Industry, and the food bank serves residents and partner organizations across Los Angeles County.

The food bank’s Senior Director of Operations and Logistics, Scott Newton, led a tour of the food bank’s new space, and even the media were impressed.

“We continue to see a high demand for food assistance, and this (new facility) allows us to do even more to help,” said Michael Flood, the food bank’s president and CEO. “The cost of living is high, inflation is high, and there’s widespread need.”

According to Flood, the food bank reaches about 900,000 people each month, providing them a variety of fresh foods for free. It also operates the largest senior food assistance program in the United States.

The food bank worked with more than 21,000 volunteers last year, and was founded in 1973.
