At least nine suspicious devices have now been found at the scene where police shot a chainsaw-wielding man during an arrest.

Plumber Sean O’Meara, 36, was wearing a gas mask and body armour when he was shot and seriously injured by a police officer close to The Park Gate Inn in Hollingbourne, Kent, on Monday.

Police thought he was holding an improvised firearm or explosive device (IED) – prompting a bomb squad to be called to the scene.

The tense standoff resulted in parts of the A20 being closed for several days as crews searched for other devices.

O’Meara is still in hospital with life-changing injuries, the police said, but the incident isn’t being treated as terrorism-related.

Police went to the address on Ashford Road around 7.15 pm on Monday to arrest a man on suspicion of assault.

The man, O’Meara, refused to leave the house, sparking a response from armed officers, who shot him around 9 pm.

A major counterterror-style police operation remains underway in Hollingbourne after multiple improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were found at a property linked to Sean O?Meara, the man shot by police during a violent confrontation near the Park Gate Inn on Monday night. Specialist search teams and the British Army bomb squad have now located and neutralised several homemade explosives at the scene in Ashford Road, prompting the third consecutive day of road closures on the M20 and A20. Police say the situation remains dynamic and potentially dangerous. O?Meara, 36, reportedly armed with a chainsaw, wearing a gas mask and body armour, was shot in the abdomen by armed officers after allegedly refusing to drop the weapon. Police had originally visited the property to arrest him on suspicion of assault, not related to terrorism. Before using live rounds, officers had fired two baton rounds and deployed police dogs, but the situation escalated when O?Meara moved toward officers, leading to the final shot. He is currently in critical condition in an induced coma at King?s College Hospital, London. His brother, Liam O?Meara, has since publicly questioned the level of force used, saying: ?The police could have Tasered him. The bullet?s gone straight in and out... it could?ve been avoided.? Since the incident, the Royal Logistic Corps Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams have been combing the area. According to a senior police source, at least three suspicious devices have been found within the grounds of the property, and further searches are ongoing. A Kent Police spokesperson confirmed: ?We continue to work with specialist partners to ensure the area is secure. We appreciate the public?s patience as precautionary measures remain in place for everyone?s safety.?

Chief Superintendent Neil Loudon said: ‘This has been a complex investigation and we appreciate that the intermittent closure of the A20 caused disruption to many.

‘We would like to thank the public for their patience and understanding whilst we conducted these vital searches.’

O’Meara’s half-brother, Liam, told The Telegraph his brother suffered from mental health problems, but says he thinks police used unreasonable force.

He said: ‘When he was shot, most of the damage was when he dropped the chainsaw, and it fell on him.

‘The bullet’s gone straight in and out, so it hasn’t caused many problems.’
