Oakland: Man charged in fatal beating where bicycle was used as a weapon

OAKLAND — A man has been arrested and charged in connection with an Aug. 30 homicide, where police say two attackers used a bicycle and a mallet to beat the victim to death, court records show.

Michael Perillo, 45, was charged Wednesday with murdering Edson Perez. He was arrested Tuesday and remains jailed without bail, court records show.

Police say that they were called to the 300 block of 8th Street in Oakland on Aug. 30, after the victim was beaten. Surveillance footage shows two men attack Perez, knocking him to the ground and assaulting him with a BMX bicycle.

After Perez was incapacitated, Perillo allegedly walked away to retrieve a mallet and struck Perez multiple times. Perez was also kicked and stomped after falling to the ground, authorities said.

Surveillance footage and eyewitnesses aided police in identifying Perillo, according to police. The second suspect has not been arrested and authorities haven’t said whether they’ve learned his identity.

Police say that when they arrested Perillo in Oakland, he appeared to be riding the same BMX bicycle that had been used in the homicide.
