Oakland: Man charged with killing teen inside crowded car

OAKLAND — A 19-year-old man has been arrested and charged with murder for allegedly shooting another teen inside a packed car as it traveled through Oakland last year, court records show.

Rony Padilla was charged Monday with murdering D’Alessandro Miguel, 17, in a Nov. 15, 2024 shooting that occurred in a moving vehicle. Police said at the time that another then-17-year-old boy was driving the car when a shot rang out, and that three other occupants ran away, leaving a dying Miguel and the driver behind.

The car was traveling on the 1100 block of 86th Avenue around 7:30 p.m. when the shooting occurred, police said. An eyewitness later told authorities that they had picked up the suspect a short time before the shooting. The witness provided a description and an Instagram handle, both of which were linked back to Padilla, authorities said.

Another investigator recognized Padilla’s description from an unrelated criminal threats case. Police believe that Padilla and two others were in the backseat of the car and that Miguel and the driver were in the front, according to court records.

Padilla has also been charged with two counts of dissuading witnesses, as well as with attempted murder and assault with a firearm in connection with a shooting that occurred in Alameda County one day earlier, court records show.

Padilla was arrested last week. He is being held without bail and hasn’t yet entered a plea, according to court records.

An online fundraiser for Miguel says that his younger sister is suffering from cancer and undergoing treatment, while Miguel’s family deals with the hardships of burying their son.
