OAKLAND — How much is a 10-year-old Nissan Altima worth?
According to Oakland police, one resident was willing to risk jail to keep his. The 36-year-old man allegedly became so irate when a repossession man hooked up his 2015 Nissan Altima to a tow truck that he went back inside, grabbed his gun, and started shooting.
Now the Oakland resident is facing charges of assault with a firearm, shooting at an occupied car, and firing a gun with gross negligence. He has pleaded not guilty but was held to answer at a July 24 preliminary hearing, court records show.
Police say the shooting occurred a little before 6 a.m. on May 22, at the 900 block of 91st Avenue in Oakland. No one was struck by gunfire but police say the suspect appeared to be aiming at the tow truck as it fled the area.
The suspect was identified based on footage from the tow truck driver’s body worn camera, and the firearm used in the shooting was registered to the suspect, authorities said. A warrant was issued for his arrest on May 23, but police didn’t actual arrest him until earlier this month, court records show.
Last year, a 51-year-old man was charged with shooting at a repossession man and beating the victim with a pole. In that case, the victim was attempting to repossess a Cadillac over an outstanding $2,000 debt, police said.
