OAKLAND — A 33-year-old Oakland man was sentenced this week to seven years in federal prison for unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, prosecutors said.
Pedro Juarez was found guilty of the charge on Sept. 25, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
On Aug. 16, 2023, Juarez forced a woman he knew to travel with him from San Jose to San Francisco, prosecutors said. After he let the woman go, she called 911 and officers descended on his location.
Juarez tried to run, prosecutors said, adding that he pulled a loaded handgun from his waistband and pointed it at the officers. His arm hit a railing, however, and the pistol fell to the ground.
Having been previously convicted of a felony, Juarez was barred from possessing firearms or ammunition.
In addition to the seven-year prison term, Juarez was ordered to serve three years of supervised release, which will begin when he leaves prison, and to forfeit his interest in the firearm and ammunition.
Juarez is in custody and will begin serving his sentence immediately, prosecutors said.
