Oakland: Motorcyclist dies after colliding with vehicle Sunday night

OAKLAND — A motorcyclist died after colliding with a vehicle Sunday night, authorities said.

The collision occurred at about 10:49 p.m. at the intersection of Hegenberger Road and Hamilton Street in east Oakland, according to the Oakland Police Department.

Police said that the motorcyclist, traveling southbound on Hegenberger Road, failed to stop at a red light and collided with the passenger side of a Volkswagen Jetta that was driving westbound through a green light on Hamilton Street.

The motorcyclist was identified as Joseph White II, a 51-year-old from Oakland, according to the Alameda County Coroner’s Office.

The passenger of the Volkswagen also was injured, police said.

The driver of the Volkswagen remained at the scene and provided a statement to police, officers added.

Police said it is unknown at this time whether drugs or alcohol were factors in the collision.
