OAKLEY – Authorities on Monday arrested a suspect in connection with a shooting that injured a man last week in Oakley.
The suspect — identified as a 35-year-old Antioch man — was booked into the Martinez Detention Facility on charges of attempted murder and shooting into an inhabited dwelling, according to the Oakley Police Department.
Over the weekend, detectives determined the shooting was “the culmination of an ongoing argument between the suspect and the victim that was occurring via social media platforms,” police said.
The shooting happened about 10:30 a.m. on Aug. 1 in the 4000 block of Macadamia Lane. Police said the victim — a 40-year-old man — drove to the suspect’s girlfriend’s home, where the suspect pointed a rifle at him and fired several shots.
Officers found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound to his back at a nearby gas station. He was taken to a hospital and is expected to recover, police said.
Police said the rifle used in the shooting has not been recovered.
In a statement, Oakley police Chief Paul Beard noted the city has had a reprieve from gun violence since 2023.
“This incident perforated that streak in a very violent fashion and in such a way that we could have had more unintended victims,” Beard said. “Any bloodshed is too much, but I am grateful nobody else was significantly injured in this incident.”
While searching the crime scene, officers discovered two homes had been struck by gunfire.
At one home, a bullet penetrated a chimney, and at the other, at least three bullets went through a sliding glass door, police said, adding that a woman inside suffered a minor cut from broken glass.
