A shootout erupted during a confrontation between an off-duty Chicago police officer and several gunmen on the Southwest Side Monday morning.
The incident unfolded about 4:20 a.m. in the 3700 block of West 67th Place when “multiple armed offenders” approached the off-duty officer and an exchange of gunfire ensued, a statement from Chicago police said.
It was not clear what sparked the confrontation.
One officer suffered a minor injury from broken glass during the shooting and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, according to police and the fire department.
The gunmen, none of whom were apparently injured, then entered a dark-colored car and sped away west, the statement said.

The “specifics of this incident,” including the comprehensive use of force investigation, are being investigated by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability with the full cooperation of the Chicago Police Department, the statement said.
The officer or officers involved in the incident will be placed on routine administrative duties for a minimum period of 30 days, officials said.
