Officers kill man who charged at them with knife, police say

Officers responding to a domestic call fatally shot a knife-wielding man early Friday inside a Little Village senior building, according to Chicago police.

The man was identified by the Cook County medical examiner’s office as 57-year-old Timothy Glaze.

Ogden District officers encountered Glaze about 2 a.m. inside a sixth-floor apartment of the Albany Terrace Apartments, 3030 W. 21st Place, police said. The officers were responding to a call of a person with a knife.

Glaze’s girlfriend had called 911 to report that she was being attacked by Glaze. She said he had a knife and screwdriver, according to a recording of police dispatch audio.

As police knocked on the door, they were confronted by Glaze who allegedly charged at officers while holding a knife, police said. That’s when officers fired, hitting Glaze multiple times, including in his chest, according to the radio transmissions.

Glaze, who lived on the same block of 21st Place, was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. Two officers were hospitalized for observation, police said.

Glaze’s uncle, Gary Glaze, said his nephew grew up in Chicago.

“He was just a regular, good guy. He had a few problems. But he was no different than anyone,” Gary Glaze told the Sun-Times.

Timothy Glaze’s criminal history includes several arrests over the last two decades for domestic battery, among other charges, though most of the counts were later dropped. He was last convicted in 2014 of trespassing at a North Side Jewel-Osco and sentenced to one day in prison, according to court records. Before that, he was convicted in 2006 of domestic battery and sentenced to 100 days.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability, which is investigating the shooting, asked anyone with information about the incident to call COPA’s office at 312-746-3609.

The officers involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for at least 30 days.

Three weeks earlier, a 16-year-old boy was fatally shot a block away. Police said the boy, Victor Alezandar Cedillo, was killed in an alley in the 3100 block of West Cermak Road on Dec. 14.
