Old dynamite found in Douglas County detonated by robot named Johnny 5-0

A Douglas County bomb squad robot helped safely detonate old dynamite found inside a residential shed, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office announced Monday.

The dynamite — found inside a metal container — belonged to a former resident who owned a construction company, the law enforcement agency said.

Dynamite can be “extremely unstable with age,” according to the sheriff’s office, so they called on a bomb squad robot named Johnny 5-0 to remove the substance.

Johnny 5-0 wheeled the red stick of dynamite out of the shed, placed it into a pre-dug blast pit and authorities blew it up in a controlled detonation.

“If you come across old explosives, dynamite, or suspicious devices — DO NOT TOUCH them,” the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office wrote. “Call the DCSO Bomb Squad immediately. We’ll handle it safely.”
