One day after release from jail, Oakland man allegedly shot himself by accident

OAKLAND — Just one day after a judge released him from jail with pending drug and gun possession charges, an Oakland man allegedly shot himself with his own gun during a dispute with a neighbor, court records show.

Now the 54-year-old is back in jail, set to be arraigned Wednesday on new charges of shooting into an unoccupied car and possessing a gun as a felon, court records show. He was arrested On Dec. 16, after showing up to the hospital with an allegedly self-inflicted gunshot wound to his leg.

The man lives on the 800 block of 33rd Avenue, at a home that an Alameda County Sheriff’s drug task force raided on Dec. 9. Police say during the operation they seized suspected drugs, an unserialized gun and a pig that was being kept in “poor living conditions” in the backyard.

On Dec. 15, Judge Michael Risher released him from jail, but ordered him to attend counseling and obey the law. Just one day later, at his home, the man allegedly pumped two shots from a pistol into his neighbor’s parked car then asked the neighbor’s fiancee to find him, so he could “show him something,” police said.

When he tried to pull the gun from his waistband, he accident discharged it into his own leg and began limping away, according to court records. Police say he was able to get someone to give him a ride to the hospital, and that he was booked into Santa Rita Jail in Dublin after receiving treatment.

The man has seven prior felony convictions, but the most recent one was from 13 years ago, court records show.
