Only purpose of junior doctor strike is to drive votes to Labour at expense of suffering patients

Labour’s recipe for non-stop walkouts

THE JUNIOR doctors’ strike has rightly been condemned as an absolute disgrace.

Its only purpose is to drive votes to Labour at the expense of suffering patients.

Not surprisingly the party’s shadow health secretary Wes Streeting is confident he can pull off a deal to end the walkouts if Labour win power on Thursday.

And no doubt the junior doctors’ Marxist leadership will lower their ludicrous 35 per cent pay demand too.

Settling this row would at least give some respite to the millions stuck on waiting lists.

But the danger for Labour is that it would only encourage the rest of the public sector unions to re-start their own demands for unaffordable payouts.

Sir Keir Starmer should send a strong message now that if he wins power he won’t have the money and he won’t be prepared to jack up taxes to keep the unions onside.

We’ve heard precious little during this election campaign on how Labour would reform public services, without splurging cash the country does not have.

It’s not too late for Labour — or the Tories — to be honest with the electorate about the huge challenges we are facing.

The IFS think-tank calls it a “conspiracy of silence”.

With only five days left, is anybody prepared to be straight with us?

Unclear Starmer

TENSIONS on the world stage are reaching boiling point.

China is increasingly belligerent, Russia is waging an unprovoked war and the Middle East is in flames. So the role of the Foreign Secretary is absolutely pivotal.

Yet when Sir Keir Starmer is pressed to give David Lammy his support as Lord Cameron’s potential successor under Labour he will only say “nice try”.

Some will say it’s fair enough not to name his Cabinet before the election is over. Others will see it as an example of his depressing lack of frankness with the British public.

After all, if Sir Keir can’t come clean on a role this important how can he complain if voters call him untrustworthy?

It’s all to play for

OK, so they weren’t exactly awe-inspiring in their last game.

But, crucially, Gareth Southgate’s boys have made it through to the knockout round of the Euros. They have got a great route to the final if they triumph tonight.

So come on England..we’re in it to win it!
