Open-top tourist bus smashes into tree in central London

A hop-on hop-off London tour bus packed with tourists has crashed in central London, just yards from the historic 7/7 bomb site, injuring several people and triggering a major emergency response. The collision occurred at around 2:40pm this afternoon, when the open-top double-decker bus struck a tree during a sightseeing route near Tavistock Square. The force of the impact crumpled the roof of the upper deck, trapping at least six people, including a young girl, inside the mangled wreckage. Emergency Services Rush to the Scene Multiple fire engines, ambulances, and paramedic units from the London Ambulance Service and London Fire Brigade rushed to the scene. Firefighters used specialist cutting tools to free the trapped passengers, working urgently to secure the damaged upper deck. Six people had to be rescued after an open top tourist bus collided with a tree in London’s Russell Square this afternoon.

Photos from the scene on Bedford Way show the roof of the bus crumpled after the crash, with windows broken and metal supports pushed aside.

No-one sustained injuries serious enough to require hospital treatment, butparamedics treated patients at the scene.

It happened yards from the Tavistock Square bomb site, where one of the 7/7 bombers detonated an explosive on a bus twenty years ago.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said they were called at 2.37pm to the crash, which only involved one vehicle, a bus which had hit a tree.

They said: ‘Officers attended with the London Ambulance Service and the London Fire Brigade.

‘Those involved sustained minor injuries. The road remains closed.’

The open top style bus involved had a covered area at the front, which bore the brunt of the impact. Seats open to the air on the top deck were behind.

Fire crews used specialist cutting tools to secure the roof, and free the passengers.

It is not yet clear whether any of those involved in the crash were children.

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said they were called at 2.35pm to the incident at the junction of the A4200 and Russell Square.

‘We sent an ambulance crew, a paramedic in a fast response car and an incident response officer to the scene.

‘Our first paramedic arrived in five minutes.

‘We assessed two patients and discharged them at the scene.’
