Overnight closures of I-225 planned at Sixth Avenue for construction

Construction will shut down northbound Interstate 225 in Aurora overnight on Sunday and Monday, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.

The two overnight closures at Sixth Avenue will allow crews to conduct “bridge rehabilitation work,” including adding new asphalt to even out the pavement, according to a news release from transportation officials.

CDOT officials said the closures will run from 9 p.m. Sunday to 5 a.m. Monday, and from 9 p.m. Monday to 5 a.m. Tuesday. Southbound I-225 will remain open.

During that time, motorists should plan for up to 20-minute delays because of the detour in place, CDOT officials said. Drivers will exit northbound I-225 toward Sixth Avenue and re-enter the highway at the traffic light.

Commercial vehicles will be routed around the closure via northbound Colorado 470 to eastbound Interstate 70, transportation officials said.

Construction will continue throughout the week, but no other full closures of the highway are planned in either direction. According to CDOT, scheduled lane closures include:

  • Two lanes on southbound I-225 at Second and Sixth avenues on Tuesday. The first lane will close at 7 p.m. and the second will close at 10 p.m., but all lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. Wednesday.
  • Two lanes on northbound I-225 at Second and Sixth avenues on Wednesday and Thursday. The first lane will close at 7 p.m. and the second will close at 10 p.m., but all lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. the next morning.

“Motorists are urged to drive with extra caution through the work zone, heed the signs, watch for crew members and equipment, follow posted speed limits and give plenty of following distance,” CDOT officials stated in the release. “Construction schedules can change depending on weather and other factors.”
