Part of M4 eastbound motorway closed all day after serious crash

One person confirmed dead at scene (next of kin informed), forensic collision investigation ongoing. The collision happened in the early hours - black Merc left the carriageway and struck a tree at the slip-road to Leigh Delamere services (famous for featuring in Gavin and Stacey). Closed between Junction 18 (Bath) to 17 (Chippenham).

Part of the M4 motorway is expected to be closed all day after an accident in the early hours of this morning.

A black Mercedes car left the eastbound carriageway near Leigh Delamere Services at around 2am, meaning the road had to be shut between Junction 18 (Bath) and Junction 17 (Chippenham).

National Highways did not give an exact time when traffic would return to normal, but said they expected disruption to continue into the afternoon.

Diversion route today

National Highways said road users are advised to follow the Solid Square diversion symbol on road signs.

  • At Bumpers Farm Roundabout take the 1st exit onto the A350 northbound towards the M4/Cirencester and continue on the A350 until you reach J17 of the M4
  • Leave the M4 at J18 and take the 3rd exit onto the A46 south towards Bath. 
  • Follow the A46 for approximately 3 miles to the roundabout with the A420 at Cold Ashton and take the 1st exit onto the A420 east towards Chippenham.
  • Remain on the A420 for approximately 10 miles to reach the Bumpers Farm Roundabout with the A350
