Parts of northbound Highway 680 set to close for weekend construction

FREMONT — A portion of northbound Highway 680 will be closed from Friday night to early Monday morning while crews repair pavement and a bridge, according to Caltrans.

The highway will be closed at the Mission Boulevard/Highway 238 exit beginning 10 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday, Caltrans said in a traffic advisory. Lanes will begin to close at 8 p.m. Friday.

A detour will be available for motorists to get around the construction by traveling on northbound Mission Boulevard/Highway 238 to Niles Canyon Road/Highway 84 and then back onto Highway 680 at Calaveras Road, Caltrans said. Authorities are expecting heavy traffic along the detour route due to the freeway closure.

The closure is necessary so that crews can resurface the deck of the bridge and work on slab repairs, which requires the use of heavy machinery, Caltrans said.

“This work must be performed without live traffic to ensure worker and motorist safety,” Caltrans said. “Concentrating these operations during weekend closures will help reduce the overall duration and impact of the project.”

Old Canyon Road will also be closed at its intersection with Niles Canyon Road from 3 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday to help prevent freeway traffic from detouring through residential neighborhoods, said the Fremont Police Department in a news release.

Southbound Highway 680, which was closed for a weekend in July, will remain open during the construction. Crews are beginning overnight work ahead of the weekend closure, and further nighttime closures will be held for additional work through the spring of 2026, Caltrans said.

Caltrans noted that the closure is weather dependent.

“Caltrans thanks the public for their patience and cooperation as we continue to improve California’s transportation network,” Caltrans said.
