Pedestrian dies in Berkeley traffic collision

BERKELEY — A pedestrian died Tuesday night after being struck by a vehicle while crossing a street, authorities said.

The name of the man killed was not immediately released pending notification of his relatives.

The collision happened about 9:25 p.m. Tuesday at Claremont Avenue and The Uplands, police said. The man struck was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

The involved vehicle and driver remained on scene, police said.

Claremont Avenue was closed from Woolsey Street to Prince Street while police investigated.

The death is the city’s first fatal traffic collision of the year, police said. Last year police investigated four fatal collisions in the city.
