BIG SUR — A fatal crash early Tuesday morning led to the death of a pedestrian on a stretch of Highway 1 just north of the Rocky Creek Bridge.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash happened around 5:08 a.m. A 59-year-old man from Aptos was behind the wheel of a white Chevrolet Express van, heading southbound when he struck a person who was in the roadway. Investigators have not yet determined why the pedestrian was in the southbound lane at that hour.
The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with authorities. He was not injured. California Highway Patrol officials say drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash.
The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. Their identity has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin.
California Highway Patrol is asking anyone with information about the incident to come forward. Tipsters can call the Monterey Area CHP office at (831) 770-8000 or email MontereyCHPTips@chp.ca.gov.
The investigation is ongoing.
