Pedestrian killed in Highway 1 hit and run near Scott Creek

SWANTON — A pedestrian walking on Highway 1 was killed in a hit-and-run collision over the weekend in North Santa Cruz County, and law enforcement authorities have not yet identified a suspected driver.

According to a Monday release from the California Highway Patrol’s Santa Cruz unit, the agency’s officers responded at approximately 11:17 p.m. Sunday to a crash on the highway north of Scott Creek. A vehicle traveling southbound on the coastal thoroughfare hit a pedestrian — a man estimated to be between 30 and 40 years old — who was walking in the southbound lane of the highway.

Reasons for the collision are still under investigation, according to the release, but the driver fled the scene and information about the vehicle remains unknown. After impact, the pedestrian came to rest in the southbound lane of the highway and was possibly struck again by several vehicles also traveling through the area.

The pedestrian suffered major injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene of the incident by medical personnel. As of print deadline Monday, the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Coroner’s Unit had not yet confirmed the identity of the decedent.

According to the release, it is also still not known if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash, but the CHP has urged members of the public with any leads or information to contact investigators with their office at 831-219-0200. The CHP is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays.
