Pedestrian killed in Oakland hit-and-run; suspect later arrested

OAKLAND — A 76-year-old woman died Sunday morning after she was struck by a pickup truck while crossing a street in the Patten neighborhood and the suspected driver who initially fled was later arrested, police said.

The name of the woman killed has not yet been released pending notification of her family. Initial reports said she was an Oakland resident.

The fatal collision happened about 8:40 a.m. Sunday at the intersection of Fruitvale Avenue and East 27th Street.

Police said the woman was walking in a marked crosswalk when she was struck by a Toyota Tacoma that was making a westbound turn onto East 27th Street from the northbound lanes of Fruitvale Avenue. The woman was taken to a hospital where she later died.

The driver fled the scene in the Toyota, police said.

He and the vehicle were located nearby a few hours later and he was arrested, authorities said. His name has not yet been released but police said he is a 40-year-old Oakland resident.

Police said based on their investigation alcohol was a factor in the collision.

The suspect is being held at Santa Rita Jail on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence, hit-and-run causing death or injury and driving under the influence of alcohol.
