The Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA is celebrating 75 years of bringing pets and people together on Aug. 2 with an all-day 75-cent adoption event. All animals at the shelter, and foster pets brought in for the day, will have 75-cent adoption fees, with adopters paying any required licensing and training fees. The event also features games, specially stocked T-shirts and other items in the Furchandise store, and complimentary treats for everyone.
Pets can be adopted for 75 cents from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. (arrive by 5 p.m. for same-day adoptions) at the Lantos Center for Compassion, 1450 Rollins Road, Burlingame, with festivities running noon-4 p.m.
‘Coming Home’ at kiosk
The Redwood City Improvement Association, in collaboration with Fung Collaboratives, is presenting “Coming Home,” an installation by Bay Area artist Ryan Carrington, at the Art Kiosk, located at 2208 Broadway through Sept. 7.
Carrington’s large-scale exhibition examines the evolving American Dream through symbols of Americana and both blue- and white-collar labor, including American flags sewn from uniforms of workers across class lines.
Through works titled after family members, including “Grandma Mae” and “Larry,” Carrington refashions everyday symbols, from pies to plumbing parts, are meant to offer respect for the past while encouraging renewed faith in the future of American identity.
Carrington, a teaching professor at Santa Clara University, grew up in a blue-collar family in the Midwest. His installations have been shown nationally and often reflect his deep respect for labor, craftsmanship and the power of material storytelling.
An artist’s reception for “Coming Home” is set for Saturday, Sept. 6, at 4 p.m. For more information, visit https://fungcollaboratives.com/art-kiosk.
