Peninsula man who fatally shot wife dies of self-inflicted gunshot wound

REDWOOD CITY — A man suspected of shooting and killing his wife before turning the gun on himself earlier this week in Redwood City died of his injuries Wednesday, police said.

The woman was identified as Denise Alessan Madrigal Martinez, and the man as Armando Madrigal Barajas Jr., the Redwood City Police Department said in an update on the case Thursday. They were both 36 years old and residents of Redwood City.

Officers were dispatched to the 1300 block of Seaport Boulevard around midnight Sunday after a security guard reported a suspicious vehicle, police said. They arrived to find the man in the driver’s seat and the woman in the front passenger seat — both were unconscious and suffering from apparent gunshot wounds to the head.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The man, however, had a pulse and was taken to an area hospital for treatment. His wound, however, was ultimately determined to be nonsurvivable, and he never regained consciousness, police said.

An investigation revealed that the pair was married and “reportedly experiencing marital difficulties,” police said, adding that “evidence indicates Armando shot and killed Denise before attempting to take his own life.” A firearm was recovered at the scene.

The incident remains under investigation.
