Phony tax return leaves Saratoga residents out more than $183k

Theft by false pretenses: A Saratoga resident reported that someone contacted them online and ultimately convinced them to invest money in a fraudulent cryptocurrency scheme for a total loss of about $58,000.

Oct. 14

Petty theft: At 2:57 a.m., someone entered an unlocked vehicle parked in the driveway of a residence in the 20000 block of Glasgow Drive and stole four garage door remotes for a total loss valued at approximately $400.

Oct. 17

Identity theft: Saratoga residents reported that someone used their information to file and obtain a tax return for a total loss of about $183,329.

Oct. 18

Recovered stolen vehicle: At 1:02 a.m., deputies recovered a vehicle, previously stolen from San Jose, in the Church of the Ascension parking lot on Ascension Drive.
