Photos: Bittersweet Azusa High graduation honors lost student, student achievement

Azusa High School’s Class of 2025 celebrated the achievements of 350 students at the Citrus College stadium on June 10.

One name was Emmanuel Serrato, the third of his family to receive the QuestBridge National College Match scholarship, a four-year, full-ride award Serrato will use when he attends Duke University in the fall.

The last name called was Angelina Gonzales.

An empty chair at the field held her cap, gown, flowers, and symbols of the 17-year-old who was part of the Aztec cheer, stunt, and wrestling teams as well as an Associated Student governor.

Angelina died on Dec. 20, fatally stabbed, prosecutors say.

As her friends and officials with the Azusa Unified School District honored her at art shows and games, her family gave two scholarships to students and tend to a memorial bench at a community garden.

They are also working for #JusticeforAngel, gearing up to attend the preliminary hearing for her accused killer at the Pomona Courthouse on June 24.
