Police alert park-goers of downtown robberies

Chicago police issued an alert Monday night after several robberies involving physical force occurred in August in Grant Park, New Eastside and the Loop.

In each incident, robbers targeted people who were alone in parks and strong-armed them to steal gold chains or necklaces, police said.

The reported incidents occurred:

  • Aug. 1 about 9:30 p.m. in the 1100 block of South Columbus Drive (Grant Park)
  • Aug. 2 about 9:45 p.m. in the 200 block of East Balbo Drive (Grant Park)
  • Aug. 11 about 3:44 p.m. in the 300 block of South Columbus Drive (Grant Park)
  • Aug. 13 about 5:25 p.m. in the 300 block of East Wacker Drive (New Eastside)
  • Aug. 22 about 8:43 a.m. in the 0–100 block of East Wacker Drive (Loop)
  • Aug. 22 about 8:48 a.m. in the 0–100 block of East Wacker Drive (Loop)
  • Aug. 22 about 11 a.m. in the 200 block of East Roosevelt Drive (Grant Park)
  • Aug. 29 about 4:12 p.m. in the 100–200 block of East Wacker Drive (Loop)

Police said the offenders include as many as five men and women, potentially ranging in age from 20 to 40 years old.

Authorities are encouraging residents to use the buddy system when possible or stick to open, well-lighted areas if walking alone. They also recommended remaining calm if confronted, making note of any unique physical characteristics of offenders, not chasing after assailants who flee the scene, and requesting contact information from any witnesses.
