It looks like the Cubs and White Sox series started a little early this season as the two jostled to gain a famous fan.
After news of Pope Leo XIV’s election as the first American pope was announced, it was reported that he was a Cubs fan. However, his brother, John Prevost, told WGN News that not only was Pope Leo XIV not a Cubs fan, but, “He was always a Sox fan.”
Pope Leo XIV now arguably becomes the most famous Sox fan, eclipsing former President Barack Obama.
“Family always knows best, and it sounds like Pope Leo XIV’s lifelong fandom falls a little closer to 35th and Shields,” said the White Sox in a statement. “Some things are bigger than baseball, and in this case, we’re glad to have a White Sox fan represented at the Vatican.
“A pinstripes White Sox jersey with his name on it and a hat already are on the way to Rome, and of course, the Pontiff always is welcome at his ballpark.”
